Measuring in Maths

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 3 Class Blog

The children have worked hard in maths this week - consolidating their learning around length, converting from metres to centimetres and millimetres as well as learning about what perimeter is. Their addition and subtraction skills are developing to help them with this, as well as their times tables. In Celebration Assembly, we found out that 10 of our class are now completing TTRS questions in under a second!! Incredible! Miss Jackson and I need to get our skates on to catch up!! Keep up the practice too, Year 3 - every little helps!

Oracy

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 3 Class Blog

We've had a great week in Year 3 and have been trying out something a bit different with some new oracy activities - the children are working on their speaking and listening and thinking about what skills and behaviours they need to practise for this. In history, we were learning about how bronze impacted prehistoric Britain, with the children taking on special roles within their groups: readers, summarisers and reporters. It was tricky at first but they had a good try! Then in maths, we played Ladders, where each child shared their thoughts about an odd shape out, considering their language choices carefully to develop a thorough discussion, including, 'I agree with you but...' and 'I did think this but now I have changed my mind because...' The children sounded really grown up and use lots of great mathematical vocabulary!

Art in Year 3

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 3 Class Blog

I thought I would share with you the children’s artwork this week. There is a lovely display in the classroom, documenting the journey through the children’s learning about charcoal techniques. Take a look below and ask you child to fill you in on what they have been doing!

Stone Age Adventurers

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 3 Class Blog

This week we have learnt lots more about Stone Age history, started reading our class novel, Stig of the Dump, and begun to plan our first independent write of 2025, all about a modern child who ends up in the Stone Age! We also had great fun at the house dodgeball competition (well done, Kirkstall!) and tackled some tricky maths, partitioning numbers to multiply and divide them. Don't forget to keep up with Mathletics tasks which will be uploaded tonight and to practise Week 2's spellings ready for next Friday. Have a great weekend!

Happy New Year!

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 3 Class Blog

Happy New Year! A cold, snowy, icy one, but hopefully a great one! The children have done really well this week, settling back into school with no outdoor playtimes and lots of new learning. Our dictionary work from our reading about washing woolly mammoths (!) is depicted below but the children have also been getting into character as Stone Age boys and girls, finding out about rocks types and learning about big life changes. Well done for getting through this first week back, Year 3 - enjoy a well deserved rest this weekend!!

Please Note - Spellings for this half term are on the class page - Week 1 spellings will be tested next Friday - We have spoken this afternoon about how there will now be one word chosen at random from the spellings which is given to the children for them to write their own sentence to show their understanding of the word.e.g. If the word is 'myth', they might write, 'The teacher read a myth to the children from a long time ago.' 7 of the 10 words will now be written as dictation (building up to all 10 by the end of the year). Mrs McDonald's group will stick with 5 for now.
