Religious Education

“Differences were meant not to divide, but to enrich.” – J. H. Oldham

Why we teach RE

“The principle aim of RE is to enable pupils to hold balanced and informed conversations about religion and worldviews.” – Dioceses of Leeds and York, Diocesan Syllabus for Religious Education 2022

We are above all a Christian school, where love infuses everything we do, underlying our every action and every relationship. In recognising the development of the whole child there is a high focus on developing children’s moral, spiritual, social and cultural understanding. Religious Education (RE) makes a significant contribution to the academic and personal development of our pupils. RE lessons offer a structured and safe space for reflection, discussion, dialogue and debate. This equips pupils with the knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews which promotes respect for others whilst allowing pupils to gain a broader understanding of views and beliefs.

The aims of the RE curriculum are:

  1. To know about and understand Christianity as a diverse global living faith through the exploration of core beliefs using an approach that critically engages with biblical text.
  2. To gain knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews appreciating diversity, continuity and change within the religions and worldviews being studied.
  3. To engage with challenging questions of meaning and purpose raised by human existence and experience.
  4. To recognise the concept of religion and its continuing influence on Britain’s cultural heritage and in the lives of individuals and societies in different times, cultures and places.
  5. To explore their own religious, spiritual and philosophical ways living, believing and thinking.
