Year 4 Essential Information - Summer 2
Welcome to our final half term in Year 4! It is always a busy and special time in school as we spend time reflecting as well as preparing for our next chapter. We have lots to look forward to this term with Sports Day, our class trip to Murton Park and transition activities as we look ahead to Year 5.
Please see our attached Long Term Plan to view our upcoming learning and experiences in Year 4.

Homework In Year 4
Reading: Your child's reading book should travel to and from school with them every day, alongside their green reading record. Reading helps children’s learning in a huge number of ways, including improving their vocabulary, developing the quality of their writing and building their comprehension skills. We expect children to read at home at least three times per week. We ask that a parent or carer sign this off in the reading record to be checked in school each Monday.
Spellings: A new spelling list will be sent home each Friday and should be practised regularly, in short bursts throughout the week, ready for a test on the following Friday. The children will also have some opportunities in class to practise. In the Friday test, five of the ten words will be tested, as individual words, and the new spellings for next week will be taught in a spelling lesson.
Mathletics: This is to be completed every week – there will be new Mathletics tasks set each Friday with trickier tasks (those scoring less than 50%) being re-set. Please check if your child needs support with any re-set tasks.
Times Tables Rock Stars: Using TTRS to practise times tables regularly at home is a very good idea. Just a three minute burst every day should see recall speeds continue to improve.
PE
This half term the children will have PE on a Wednesday (Athletics) and a Thursday (Rounders). Appropriate kit (trainers, black trousers/shorts with a white t-shirt and plain black jacket/jumper) must be worn on these days please.
Things to remember:
- All children should bring a named flask or bottle of water to school. This should be taken home and washed every day.
- Named pumps must be worn in school. Children should be able to tie laces quickly if they have lace-up pumps/outdoor shoes and pumps should be checked by a parent every half term to ensure they are in good condition to prevent trip hazards.
- Named, appropriate clothing for the weather should be brought every day – please ensure your child has a coat in school every day. Gloves and hats may also still be a good idea at this time of year.
- School Policy is that, other than for religious reasons, children should not wear jewellery in school apart from a watch (smart watches are not allowed). These need to be removed for PE lessons.

DT - Cooking - Adapting A Recipe
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog
As part of Healthy Living Week, we always do our DT cooking units. In Year 4 we have been focusing on the skill of adapting a recipe. We made changes to a basic biscuit recipe to make it healthier and then made our biscuits, using the skills of weighing, mixing, shaping and cutting out. We also designed some fantastic packaging, considering how to make it appealing to our target audience.
Bible Exhibition
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog
Year 4 worked alongside Year 3 today when we were visited by Jenny Leng and her team who presented their Bible Exhibition. We listened to lots of stories from the Bible, told by people dressed up in role. We also took part in some role play ourselves and tackled a tricky Bible quiz. Both classes listened extremely respectfully and attentively throughout and we were very propound of the way they represented our school.
Symmetry
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog
Year 4 have been drawing symmetrical figures in maths today. They did so with accuracy and care. Well done Year 4!
In addition, we want to say a huge well done to all of Year 4 for the mature attitude with which they approached the Multiplication Tables Check this week. Their hard work over the weeks and months really showed and we are very proud of them all.
Odd and the Frost Giants
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog
This week we have begun our writing unit based on Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman. We have been doing lots of sentence stacking and Year 4 have been using some fantastic vocabulary. Well done Year 4!
