Year 4 Essential Information - Summer 2
Welcome to our final half term in Year 4! It is always a busy and special time in school as we spend time reflecting as well as preparing for our next chapter. We have lots to look forward to this term with Sports Day, our class trip to Murton Park and transition activities as we look ahead to Year 5.
Please see our attached Long Term Plan to view our upcoming learning and experiences in Year 4.
If you need to get in touch, please contact us on:

Homework In Year 4
Reading: Your child's reading book should travel to and from school with them every day, alongside their green reading record. Reading helps children’s learning in a huge number of ways, including improving their vocabulary, developing the quality of their writing and building their comprehension skills. We expect children to read at home at least three times per week. We ask that a parent or carer sign this off in the reading record to be checked in school each Monday.
Spellings: A new spelling list will be sent home each Friday and should be practised regularly, in short bursts throughout the week, ready for a test on the following Friday. The children will also have some opportunities in class to practise. In the Friday test, five of the ten words will be tested, as individual words, and the new spellings for next week will be taught in a spelling lesson.
Mathletics: This is to be completed every week – there will be new Mathletics tasks set each Friday with trickier tasks (those scoring less than 50%) being re-set. Please check if your child needs support with any re-set tasks.
Times Tables Rock Stars: Using TTRS to practise times tables regularly at home is a very good idea. Just a three minute burst every day should see recall speeds continue to improve.
PE
This half term the children will have PE on a Wednesday (Athletics) and a Thursday (Rounders). Appropriate kit (trainers, black trousers/shorts with a white t-shirt and plain black jacket/jumper) must be worn on these days please.
Things to remember:
- All children should bring a named flask or bottle of water to school. This should be taken home and washed every day.
- Named pumps must be worn in school. Children should be able to tie laces quickly if they have lace-up pumps/outdoor shoes and pumps should be checked by a parent every half term to ensure they are in good condition to prevent trip hazards.
- Named, appropriate clothing for the weather should be brought every day – please ensure your child has a coat in school every day. Gloves and hats may also still be a good idea at this time of year.
- School Policy is that, other than for religious reasons, children should not wear jewellery in school apart from a watch (smart watches are not allowed). These need to be removed for PE lessons.

Maths Investigation
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog
Year 4 embraced the Whole School Maths Challenge today, exploring possible geometric shapes for a box to exactly hold 36 chocolates. They worked in pairs, using cubes and counters to test different ideas and found a variety of solutions, including a range of rectangles, a square, an equilateral triangle and even a rhombus!
DT - Pavilions
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog
Today we began building our pavilions which we have designed in DT. We used lolly sticks, straws and LOTS of card triangles - and it was quite a challenge! Year 4 really had to dig deep, persevere and show their resilience but we kept going and the pavilions are starting to take shape. Well done Year 4!
The Princess And The Pea
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog
In our English lessons this week, we have begun writing our own versions of the traditional tale, 'The Princess And The Pea'. Year 4 have been using thesauruses to support their writing and have come up with some fantastic vocabulary.
Science - Measuring Temperature
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 4 Class Blog
Today in science we have been using thermometers to accurately measure temperature, observing patterns of change over time. We started off measuring the temperature of a cup of ice, but by afternoon it had melted to liquid. We then plotted the data we had collected onto a line graph.
Roman Standards

Look at our fabulous Roman standards! Year 4 had a great time this afternoon making their own standards, creating designs which represented themselves.
