Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 Curriculum Map
Year 5 Essential Information
Below are some brief details about our learning this half term and some key information to help the half term run smoothly. Please do keep an eye out for regular information about our class on the new school and any last minute information or changes on the school app.
English: In class we will continue to follow the Jane Considine scheme which proved successful last year. The children will write a detailed description of Scrooge and write a Victorian set mystery story. Alongside this they will study a variety of texts with a link to the Industrial Revolution, engineering or the Victorians.. Reading: Children are still expected to be reading at home and should all have their own book to take home or one of their own choice, that is at the expected standard for their age . We ask that the children read at home at least 3 x per week. They have been issued with their own Planner in which a parent/guardian should sign to say your child has completed the required reading. The children are also expected to write down 5 new words they encounter during their reading each week and define them in the planner. The planners will need to be checked in school on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. In class we have whole class guided reading on a range of fiction and non fiction texts, 3 x per week as well as daily story time. Some children requiring extra assistance will be heard regularly in class. You can help your child’s progress by hearing them read for at least 5 minutes every day or questioning them on what they have read. It really is the key to all their future success. Maths: We will continue to follow the White Rose Maths programme of study and for most of this half term the focus will be on formal multiplication and division and a return to more fraction work. Children are also set 3 mathletics tasks each week which should be completed at home. Please email me if you require their login details. We also recommend they keep practising their multiplication tables on TT Rockstars at least 3 times a week, at home, as this will benefit their division and fraction work immensely. They will also continue to use TTRS in school on a regular basis. HUMANITIES HISTORY: Learning about The Victorians and the Industrial Revolution and the huge impact it had and some of the important people from that time such as Dickens, Dr Barnardoand Brunuel. GEOGRAPHY: As we are going to Whitby for a residential we will be undertaking a case study of the town and location. Science We well be looking at the properties of different materials and which van be altered. Grouping materials based on properties including: hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity and response to magnets ; Dissolving ; Separating mixtures ;Reasons for everyday uses of materials ;Reversible/irreversible changes RRE: In R.E. we will be learning more about the life of Jesus, leading up to our big question - What would Jesus do?
Computing: We will be looking at Flat-file databases - Using a database ; to order data and create charts to answer questions.
UNDERSTANDING THE ARTS ART: We follow the new Art Access online scheme of learning. This term focussing on fashion design. MUSIC: This term we are fortunate to have Mr Rickson come in and teach Ukulele every Monday morning for this term which will culminate in a performance towards the end of term.
PSHE – Children will be looking at their mental health and well-being and dealing with feelings. P.E. – This half term in P.E. we will focus on hockey and netball. P.E. Sessions are on Monday & Thursday, so please send your child to school already dressed in their P.E. kit.
Things to remember:
· All children should bring a flask or bottle of water to school. This should be taken home and washed every day.
Please read with your child for 5 minutes every day or questioning them on what they have read. It really is the key to all their future success.
· PE is on a Monday and Thursday for this half term. Children should come dressed in their P.E. kit and will stay in it for the rest of the day. A change of clothing is not necessary. Children need to come to school in a white t-shirt and black shorts or black tracksuit plus trainers. Planners should be brought in for review every Monday, Wednesday, Friday - signed by an adult to say they have heard the child read that week. · Spellings are put on the class blog on a Friday evening. The subsequent spelling practice of the words is the following Thursday. Spelling practice will take the form of dictated sentences. The children will receive a score out of 10 for the practiced words and another score out of 10 for the correct punctuation in their sentences and correct spellings of common words they should already know. · Mathletics homework will usually consist of 3 tasks I have set the children. Please ensure the children attempt these before playing on other areas of Mathletics as their scores are fed through to me and allow me to target any areas the children might be struggling with. If you have lost your login, please contact Mr Routledge · Children access TTRockstars 3 times a week in school, However, it is recommended that they spend 5 minutes on it every day to get super secure and quicker. · Children should not bring anything to school other than book bag, school book, planner, packed lunch and a water bottle. May I remind parents and carers to ensure that all of your child’s clothing is named as it makes finding the right owner so much

My goodness, it's almost October already. This week the children have started an astronaut in space themed picture in art ; completed the unit on place value in maths ; learnt about Margaret Hamilton, a computing pioneer ; located Russia on the world map ; sang 'Living on a prayer' more times than is healthy for my ears ; and completed their pictures of the solar system with planets made to scale which incorporated a wide variety of skills : researching on the internet, rounding to thousands, the use of scale representation and trickiest of all, how to use a compass. They're not quite ready for the walls but I thought you might like to see them below. They're pretty impressive.
Don't forget that next Thursday sees the relaunch of TTrockstars and the children can come to school dressed as their rock/pop heroes.
On Wednesday is the Class collective worship which I believe begins at 9.30. Can children come dressed in their black tracksuits that day, please
This week's spellings for practise on Thursday 6th October are words where the 'y' makes a long 'i' sound

I was out of class on Friday so apologies for the delay. Last week the children edited their recounts of the summer holidays and began a new writing project based on a short cartoon about a young girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut. They continued with the space theme by learning about the beginning of the Space Race and the launch of Sputnik 1 . I think it is safe to say that Thursday was their favourite day as they combined an introductory R.E. lesson to Islam with their first goes on the Virtual Reality headsets. Even more remarkable was that no one crashed into each other or was sick! Unlike Mr Routledge.
This week's spellings are words that use the letter 'y' to make an 'i' sound.

Hello again. Phew, it's Friday again and the end of another week of excellent learning in Year 5. This week the children began their first independent write - a recount of their summer holidays. In maths we looked into the value of digits up to a million and the power of 10. In art we made our own portraits in the style of Julian Opie and in IT looked at what systems are. In P.E. Totally Runable (sic) delivered separate learning to the boys and then the girls. We also launched ourselves into our new topic - Space - by looking at the planets of the solar system and devising mnemonics to help us remember them. This week also saw the launch of a new house point system to replace the old stamp rewards.
Unfortunately we have had printer issues today so below are this week's spellings (just in case anyone is eager to crack on this weekend!)
Don't forget Monday is a bank holiday so enjoy the long weekend.
- ambitious
- fictitious
- infectious
- nutritious
- contentious
- superstitious
- pretentious
- scrumptious
- anxious
10. obnoxious
Welcome to the Year 5 blog.
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 5 Class Blog
Hello and a warm welcome to Year 5, for those who don’t know me my name is Mr Routledge. I hope everyone had a relaxing summer and managed to catch up with family and friends. It’s great to be back and I’m super excited to be starting a new year in Year 5 and even luckier to be doing it with many of the children I’ve taught before. The children all seem highly enthused and motivated to be back and have settled in wonderfully as we embark on a, hopefully, more ‘normal’ academic year. This week has mainly been focussed on settling in and establishing routines, roles and expectations and all the children have responded admirably.
Next week we will begin our new topic of 'Space' in which we investigate the planets. The Space Race looks at the laws of gravity. Topics will now last the whole term instead of just half a term to allow more in depth learning. Also, this half term will see the harvest festival, the relaunch of TTRockstars and the return of class assemblies, with Year 5 up first! We will let you know the details nearer the time.
Have a great weekend
Mr Routledge
