Welcome to Year 5

Year 5 Curriculum Map

Year 5 Essential Information

Below are some brief details about our learning this half term and some key information to help the half term run smoothly. Please do keep an eye out for regular information about our class on the new school and any last minute information or changes on the school app.

English: In class we will continue to follow the Jane Considine scheme which proved successful last year. The children will write a detailed description of Scrooge and write a Victorian set mystery story. Alongside this they will study a variety of texts with a link to the Industrial Revolution, engineering or the Victorians..

Reading: Children are still expected to be reading at home and should all have their own book to take home or one of their own choice, that is at the expected standard for their age . We ask that the children read at home at least 3 x per week. They have been issued with their own Planner in which a parent/guardian should sign to say your child has completed the required reading. The children are also expected to write down 5 new words they encounter during their reading each week and define them in the planner. The planners will need to be checked in school on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. In class we have whole class guided reading on a range of fiction and non fiction texts, 3 x per week as well as daily story time. Some children requiring extra assistance will be heard regularly in class. You can help your child’s progress by hearing them read for at least 5 minutes every day or questioning them on what they have read. It really is the key to all their future success.

Maths: We will continue to follow the White Rose Maths programme of study and for most of this half term the focus will be on formal multiplication and division and a return to more fraction work. Children are also set 3 mathletics tasks each week which should be completed at home. Please email me if you require their login details. We also recommend they keep practising their multiplication tables on TT Rockstars at least 3 times a week, at home, as this will benefit their division and fraction work immensely. They will also continue to use TTRS in school on a regular basis.

HUMANITIES

HISTORY: Learning about The Victorians and the Industrial Revolution and the huge impact it had and some of the important people from that time such as Dickens, Dr Barnardoand Brunuel.

GEOGRAPHY: As we are going to Whitby for a residential we will be undertaking a case study of the town and location.

Science We well be looking at the properties of different materials and which van be altered. Grouping materials based on properties including: hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity and response to magnets ; Dissolving ; Separating mixtures ;Reasons for everyday uses of materials ;Reversible/irreversible changes

RRE: In R.E. we will be learning more about the life of Jesus, leading up to our big question - What would Jesus do?

Computing: We will be looking at Flat-file databases - Using a database ;  to order data and create charts to answer questions.

UNDERSTANDING THE ARTS

ART: We follow the new Art Access online scheme of learning. This term focussing on fashion design.

MUSIC: This term we are fortunate to have Mr Rickson come in and teach Ukulele every Monday morning for this term which will culminate in a performance towards the end of term.

PSHE – Children will be looking at their mental health and well-being and dealing with feelings.

P.E. – This half term in P.E. we will focus on hockey and netball. P.E. Sessions are on Monday & Thursday, so please send your child to school already dressed in their P.E. kit.

 Things to remember:

·     All children should bring a flask or bottle of water to school. This should be taken home and washed every day.

Please read with your child for 5 minutes every day or questioning them on what they have read. It really is the key to all their future success.

·     PE is on a Monday and Thursday for this half term. Children should come dressed in their P.E. kit and will stay in it for the rest of the day. A change of clothing is not necessary. Children need to come to school in a white t-shirt and black shorts or black tracksuit plus trainers.

Planners should be brought in for review every Monday, Wednesday, Friday - signed by an adult to say they have heard the child read that week.

·     Spellings are put on the class blog on a Friday evening. The subsequent spelling practice of the words is the following Thursday. Spelling practice will take the form of dictated sentences. The children will receive a score out of 10 for the practiced words and another score out of 10 for the correct punctuation in their sentences and correct spellings of common words they should already know.

·     Mathletics homework will usually consist of 3 tasks I have set the children. Please ensure the children attempt these before playing on other areas of Mathletics as their scores are fed through to me and allow me to target any areas the children might be struggling with. If you have lost your login, please contact Mr Routledge

·     Children access TTRockstars 3 times a week in school, However, it is recommended that they spend 5 minutes on it every day to get super secure and quicker.

·     Children should not bring anything to school other than book bag, school book, planner, packed lunch and a water bottle.

May I remind parents and carers to ensure that all of your child’s clothing is named as it makes finding the right owner so much

Week 2 of Autumn 2

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 5 Class Blog

This week the children have completed their Mars transmission writing. Next week they will independently write their own version. In maths we carried on looking at common multiples and factors and time saving methods for multiplying and dividing multiples of ten. In geography the children research Russia ; Learnt what the term 'video' means in computing in preparation for filming their Mars transmissions ; In P.E. the children continued to learn the intricacies of dodgeball and dancing (though not at the same time) ; continues their versions of Van Gogh's starry night; and learnt about  the Incarnation story from the Bible. We've also talked A LOT about the residential in April as I had to go and choose the activities. The children asked for parachuting, bungee jumping and a ghost walk in a graveyard at night! Thankfully, none of those were offered. Today, Friday 11th, the whole school observed an impeccable minute's silence of remembrance. Have a great weekend.

Welcome back

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 5 Class Blog

A belated welcome back to the children after the half term break. It seems like we've never been away!  I hope everyone had a safe bonfire night. This week we have started writing a Mars transmission, inspired by the film, The Martian, about a man who gets stranded on Mars. The children even got to visit Mars itself via the VR headsets. In maths we have been learning about prime numbers, common multiples and factors and squared numbers. In our history of the Space race we reached the Apollo moon landings and in science we tried to figure out why we always face the same part of the moon and how long we take to orbit the sun. The hardest part of which was drawing circles of our orbit in the playground! We were also lucky enough to have a visit from the NSPCC who talked to children about their rights and what to do if something is worrying or concerning them. Please speak to your child about this just to make sure they've properly understood. Just a reminder that there will be a special collective worship for remembrance day this week. If children wish to purchase a poppy, the Year 6 children will be coming round the classrooms each day for donations.

Week ending 14/10

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 5 Class Blog

Hello,

As we rapidly approach the end of our first half term, just a reminder that school is closd on Friday 21st October. This week the children put the finishing touches to their spaceman pictures, completed the editing of their space stories and tried to replicate the distances of the planets from the sun, to scale, using straws, pencils, string and toilet roll. Pictures to follow!

This week's spellings are more homophones. If you are unsure of the meaning, look it up in a dictionary. It's important to recognise the difference between two homophones.  I will continue to include numbers in the sentences so make sure you know them too!

week ended 7th October

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 5 Class Blog

Wow, What a week! When not rocketing into space with flights of imagination in their story writing the children have been helping to entertain the school. On Wednesday Year 5 performed their Collective Worship on 'love' to the rest of the school and their adults which was raptuously received. The very next day they dressed up as rockstars and helped me relaunch TTRockstars with a rousing rendition of 'Livin' on a prayer' to raucous appreciation. They then sang it again at break time, and at lunchtime, and at hometime and no doubt to you on the way home... It's been a very tiring but hugely enjoyable week.
