Year 5 Essential Information

Below are some brief details about our learning this half term and some key information to help the half term run smoothly. Please do keep an eye out for regular information about our class on the new school and any last minute information or changes on the school app.

English: In class we will continue to follow the Jane Considine scheme which proved successful last year. The children will write a detailed description of Scrooge and write a Victorian set mystery story. Alongside this they will study a variety of texts with a link to the Industrial Revolution, engineering or the Victorians..

Reading: Children are still expected to be reading at home and should all have their own book to take home or one of their own choice, that is at the expected standard for their age . We ask that the children read at home at least 3 x per week. They have been issued with their own Planner in which a parent/guardian should sign to say your child has completed the required reading. The children are also expected to write down 5 new words they encounter during their reading each week and define them in the planner. The planners will need to be checked in school on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. In class we have whole class guided reading on a range of fiction and non fiction texts, 3 x per week as well as daily story time. Some children requiring extra assistance will be heard regularly in class. You can help your child’s progress by hearing them read for at least 5 minutes every day or questioning them on what they have read. It really is the key to all their future success.

Maths: We will continue to follow the White Rose Maths programme of study and for most of this half term the focus will be on formal multiplication and division and a return to more fraction work. Children are also set 3 mathletics tasks each week which should be completed at home. Please email me if you require their login details. We also recommend they keep practising their multiplication tables on TT Rockstars at least 3 times a week, at home, as this will benefit their division and fraction work immensely. They will also continue to use TTRS in school on a regular basis.

HUMANITIES

HISTORY: Learning about The Victorians and the Industrial Revolution and the huge impact it had and some of the important people from that time such as Dickens, Dr Barnardoand Brunuel.

GEOGRAPHY: As we are going to Whitby for a residential we will be undertaking a case study of the town and location.

Science We well be looking at the properties of different materials and which van be altered. Grouping materials based on properties including: hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity and response to magnets ; Dissolving ; Separating mixtures ;Reasons for everyday uses of materials ;Reversible/irreversible changes

RRE: In R.E. we will be learning more about the life of Jesus, leading up to our big question - What would Jesus do?

Computing: We will be looking at Flat-file databases - Using a database ;  to order data and create charts to answer questions.

UNDERSTANDING THE ARTS

ART: We follow the new Art Access online scheme of learning. This term focussing on fashion design.

MUSIC: This term we are fortunate to have Mr Rickson come in and teach Ukulele every Monday morning for this term which will culminate in a performance towards the end of term.

PSHE – Children will be looking at their mental health and well-being and dealing with feelings.

P.E. – This half term in P.E. we will focus on hockey and netball. P.E. Sessions are on Monday & Thursday, so please send your child to school already dressed in their P.E. kit.

 Things to remember:

·     All children should bring a flask or bottle of water to school. This should be taken home and washed every day.

Please read with your child for 5 minutes every day or questioning them on what they have read. It really is the key to all their future success.

·     PE is on a Monday and Thursday for this half term. Children should come dressed in their P.E. kit and will stay in it for the rest of the day. A change of clothing is not necessary. Children need to come to school in a white t-shirt and black shorts or black tracksuit plus trainers.

Planners should be brought in for review every Monday, Wednesday, Friday - signed by an adult to say they have heard the child read that week.

·     Spellings are put on the class blog on a Friday evening. The subsequent spelling practice of the words is the following Thursday. Spelling practice will take the form of dictated sentences. The children will receive a score out of 10 for the practiced words and another score out of 10 for the correct punctuation in their sentences and correct spellings of common words they should already know.

·     Mathletics homework will usually consist of 3 tasks I have set the children. Please ensure the children attempt these before playing on other areas of Mathletics as their scores are fed through to me and allow me to target any areas the children might be struggling with. If you have lost your login, please contact Mr Routledge

·     Children access TTRockstars 3 times a week in school, However, it is recommended that they spend 5 minutes on it every day to get super secure and quicker.

·     Children should not bring anything to school other than book bag, school book, planner, packed lunch and a water bottle.

May I remind parents and carers to ensure that all of your child’s clothing is named as it makes finding the right owner so much

Hello, we've finally made it through the 3517 days of January and the evening s aren't quite as dark which is cause for celebration. In school the children have learnt greeting in French; multiplication of mixed numbers in maths; begun an historical murder mystery in writing; read the original opening chapter from  Oliver Twist ; learnt about the appalling conditions that children were forced to work under during the industrial revolution; played netball in P.E.; continued to impress on the ukulele; celebrated Chinese New Year; learnt about flat base data systems in Computing; and investigated which solutes are soluble and insoluble in science (I'll let them explain to you what those terms mean).

Message for Maher: email me and I will send your login details

Spellings this week are to practice homophones and near homophones so it is important you know the differences in meaning.

This week the children have been focussed on editing and improving their writing and revisiting subordinate clauses. In maths we completed division and multiplication with word problems ; with Mrs Whitehead they began their fashion design in art and learnt about the dangers of smoking in PSHE. The children were shocked at what children in Victorian times had to do to earn money and rerad all about Philias Fogg in guided reading. In P.E. they continued to enjoy netball and in science tried to group materials in different ways, included magnetism and electricity conductors.

Hello again,

First off, apologies for the lack of mathletics homework – my temporary laptop and their website just do not get along. I will let you know as soon as I can on it again.

Another week of January gone and the end of the darkness is in sight! This week the children have been up to all sorts. On Monday the children had a very musical day: learning to play the ukulele in the morning and an invitation to take up a new musical instrument in a special music assembly in the afternoon. In writing they have been writing a detailed character description of Scrooge and still getting to grips with multiplication of 4 digit numbers by a 2 digit number. In Pshe the children looked at feelings involved with new beginnings and change; and in art they started to research fashion in a steam punk style to fit in with our topic of The Industrial Revolution. In history we looked at how the industrial revolution changed the face of Britain and the world. Finally, today was our interhouse dodgeball competition, which was heaps of fun.

Our spellings this week are to practise the suffix – ness :

Week ending 10th January

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 5 Class Blog

Hello, welcome back and a Happy New Year! This week saw the delayed start to what is laughingly known as the Spring Term. Disappointed as they were to be gifted a snow day on Monday, they soon recovered in time to start the new year afresh and ready to learn. This week we have been getting to grips with Dickens; creating a character description of Scrooge ; returned to multiplication using the formal method (the way you were taught at school) to multiply 2 digits by 2 digits. ( As I keep telling the children, the mathematical calculations are pretty simple, it's the process that takes time to get embedded, so any practice you can give your child, even if just 5 minutes here and there, will help them). We also started our topic on the Industrial Revolution by looking at the Victorians and the British Empire; In science we learnt about the power of levers.

A new date for your diaries is to note that PE days are Mondays and Thursdays for this term. We will also be restarting ukelele lessons on Monday mornings so if your child has their own ukelele they may bring it in.

This week's spellings are to practise the suffix -ity :

community

curiosity

ability

captivity

activity

sensitivity

possibility

flexibility

visibility

eternity

Have a great weekend and stay warm!

It's Christmas!

Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 5 Class Blog

Hello, Sorry for my absence the past couple of weeks, but I broke my laptop and access has been a problem.

I just wanted to say a huge thankyou from Mrs Milne and myself for your very generous Christmas gifts and cards. This (very) long term has been great and I hope everybody gets a chance to rest, relax and eat themselves silly over the festive break.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Big Love

Mr Routledge and Mrs Milne
