Welcome to Year 2
Year 2 Curriculum Map
Welcome to Year 2!
Welcome to the Autumn term in Year 2! The children will be in class with Miss Jackson (Monday and Tuesday) and Miss White (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with additional support from Mrs Pullan. Above is our Long Term Plan for the year with details about the Year 2 curriculum. Below are some brief details about elements of our learning this half term and some key information to help the half term run smoothly. There are also Knowledge Organisers for our science, RE, history and geography for your information. Please do keep an eye out for regular information about our class on our blog (details for which will be on the school newsletter, although if you’ve found this, you’re in the right place!) and any last minute information or changes on the school app. If you have any questions, please contact both of us at anna.white@adel-st-john.leeds.sch.uk or emma.jackson@adel-st-john.leeds.sch.uk and we will reply as soon as we can.
Thanks for your continued support.
Kind regards,
Miss White and Miss Jackson
Reading: Children will continue to bring home books weekly and have 1:1 reading sessions in school. We will collect in returned books on a Monday and keep these until Tuesday when new books will be provided. Please aim to read these, and other books, with your child for 5 to 10 minutes each day. There is a yellow reading record that will come home with these books too, please indicate when a book has been read with a tick or initials and any comments if you feel necessary. Please return the reading record when books are returned. Reading in school will take place as part of our phonics sessions and children will also be heard 1:1 during the week.
Spellings: Spellings will be taught in class during our phonics lessons. There will be a weekly quiz of 5 words and a dictated sentence towards the end of each unit. These will all be taken from the review part of our phonics sessions and, as such, words will not be sent home to practice.
Below is a breakdown of the sounds and spelling patterns for the Summer term.
Handwriting: Handwriting sessions will initially take place every day. We learn cursive handwriting in Year 2. Below is a link to example joins we will be learning.
Cursive Letter Joins - Animations and Worksheets Letter version 2
PE: PE this half term is Fundamentals on Tuesday and Team Building on Friday. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit – black jogging bottoms or shorts (if the weather is fit), white t-shirt, black jacket and trainers.
Things to remember:
- All children should bring a flask or bottle of water to school. Water only, please. This should be taken home and washed every day.
- Named pumps must be worn in school. Children should be able to tie laces quickly if they have lace-up pumps/outdoor shoes and pumps should be checked by a parent every half term to ensure they are in good condition to prevent trip hazards.
- Named, appropriate clothing for the weather should be brought every day – please ensure your child has a coat if rain is forecast or looks likely, especially as we head towards the winter.
- School Policy is that, other than for religious reasons, children should not wear jewellery in school apart from a watch. These need to be removed for PE lessons.

Welcome back!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
What a fantastic first week back we have had in Year 2! The children have come back to school refreshed and enthusiastic about starting a new year.
We have started this week by reading the book ‘The Planet in a Pickle Jar’ and doing several activities around this including making a pickle jar of our own with a special memory inside that we want to preserve. These, along with a setting description of the pickle jar library and some more artwork will be displayed in time for our first parents’ evening for you all to see.
We cannot wait for the rest of this year after such an amazing start!

This week, ASJ went to the polls and voted for next year’s house captains, vice captains and each class’ school councillors. Congratulations to Isabelle and Ted for being selected as school councillors for our class. They are ready to go at the start of Year 3 in September.

Happy New Year!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
Happy New Year and welcome back to a pretty chilly Spring Term! Despite a shorter week, we have been super busy in Year 2 starting our new topics. We have begun learning about architecture in art and started with an rowdy activity about which house we would prefer to live in.
We have started our RE topic about Jewish people by looking at some different artefacts and trying to work out what they were used for.
And we have completed a science investigation about how different materials can be forced to change shape.
DT Ferris Wheels
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
Year 2 have been testing out stability in DT this week in preparation for making their Ferris wheels. They used plasticine formed into different shapes and tilted them to see if they would roll or stay stable. The most stable shape was a pyramid.
Choose Respect!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
This week has been anti-bullying week and the theme for this year is ‘Choose Respect’. We have learnt about what respect is and how we can show it by writing some respect pledges. To finish off the week we had a Diversity Workshop where we learnt the importance of being yourself and valuing everyone for being themselves too. We listened to the story ‘Odd Dog Out’ and drew a sausage dog that would represent our personalities.
Church Visit
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
Last week, we had a lovely visit the church. The weather was kind to us for our walk and when we arrived Rev. Alison and Karen talked to us about how the church gives Christians friendship, forgiveness and peace. We were then able to explore the church and ask any questions. The children’s questions and answers were very thoughtful and thought provoking.
Filey!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
Despite the disappointment of not being able to go to Filey due to the weather, Year 2 had a brilliant day yesterday learning all about it. We spent some time looking at maps and plotting our journey and looking how far it was and how long it would have taken. We looked at maps of Filey and identified different symbols to show where different amenities and attractions were. Finally, we looked at pictures of the different physical and human features and created a double page spread all about what we had found out. We even had an ice lolly to end the day!
