Welcome to Autumn Term in Year 2! Please find on this page all the information you might need this year. There is a long term plan as well as Autumn's knowledge organisers below, which will be updated termly. Should you need anything further, please get in touch!
Mrs Moleele will be teaching on a Monday and Tuesday and Miss Christie will teach on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Miss Smith will support the children throughout the week with Mrs McDonald and Miss Battye sharing the week between them.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

The children had a great day at the Sculpture Park on Tuesday, with beautiful weather too! They enjoyed seeing lots of the sculptures and even more, had the chance to learn skills from a real artist. Thank you to our parent volunteers for helping make it such a great day!
Year 2 Spelling Homework

Tonight we are sending home our weekly spelling homework. This is a list of words taken from our previous learning in phonics and the National Curriculum Year 1 and Year 2 spelling list.
The children can practise spelling the words by saying and writing the word on one side of the sheet and exploring the word further on the opposite side.
Please feel free to practise the spellings in other ways if that better suits your child eg use magnetic letters, using technology or painting.
You do not need to return the sheet to school as we will use the words in a dictation the following week to check the children's learning.
Getting into Routine

This week has been the children's first full week with all their lessons! It's been a busy one but there has been lots of fun and learning. They have started their DT topic on fairground rides, got engrossed in James and the Giant Peach and had lots of practical maths, creating and partitioning numbers to 100.

It’s been a great first week in Year 2! The children have all seemed excited to be back and have got stuck in with all their new learning!
We have been looking at a book called The Planet in a Pickle Jar, which is all about preserving our favourite things so they never disappear and our week’s learning culminated in us making our own pickle jars to save the world this afternoon! It was lovely to see so many creative ideas - trees, weather, animals, food - see for yourselves below!
We have also been working practically in maths, making numbers to 100 with various apparatus, counting in groups of 10 to help us count more quickly and easily.

Money challenge!

In PSHE we have been learning about money and jobs. We had an additional challenge to work out the total if we had one of each note and coin.
We spent time using the money resources in class and working systematically to find the answer.

First Week in Year 2!

What a great start to Year 2 we have had this week. The children have come in ready to learn and really done their best this week.
We’ve started with work around a book called ‘Planet in a Pickle Jar’. The children have done some writing and made their own pickle jar with an important memory preserved inside.

What a great final full week we’ve had in Year 2. We cast our votes in the House Captain elections yesterday. We had a trip to the polling station set up in the entrance and did a secret ballot.
Today we have done a mini DT project to make a moving monster! The children have brought these home today. They look fab and move really well!

We’ve had another busy week in Year 2. We started the week with an investigation in maths where we were finding out how big the classroom is. We measured the length and width of the room using metre sticks and then multiplied the measurements by 2.
We have also finished our DT project the make memory pouches. These are all sewn and decorated and look fabulous!
In geography we have been recapping labels for the world map. We labelled the continents, oceans, equator and poles.
Finally, we have ended our week with a PSHE session about perseverance and had a challenge to build the tallest tower possible using only 6 sheets of newspaper. It was a challenge too!

Year 2 have had a very busy week! We have finished our science investigation to prove what we know about how plants grow best, we have been looking at animal offspring and sorting them into groups, we have used the VR headsets to look at sacred places in RE and we have been continuing to sew our memory pouches in DT.

This week, Year 2 have started their final DT project of the year. The project is to sew a memory pouch to keep precious items in. We began by trying out sewing running stitch and then drew and cut out our template from felt.
