Year 6 Curriculum Map
The Year 6 long term plan is below. This shows the coverage of work for the whole year. Items to note: Art and DT are generally taught on alternative terms; this is the same for History and Geography.
In this half term, we will be covering many topics across the curriculum.
English
English is split into Reading, Writing and Spellings.
Reading
We will be looking a range of texts (both fiction and fiction) to build the suite of reading skills - fluency, vocab knowledge, retrieval, inference, explanation and summary). Mainly, a text will be read each week to develop each skill; some of the texts are linked to our current half term value and out Science and History units.
Please ensure your child is reading at the very least 3 times per week at home to support them, not just reading independently but also support learning across the curriculum. Planners should be signed on the day they have read, with a comment as appropriate. If children particularly like a word or phrase they can write it in their planner as well.
Writing
We will be writing a range of pieces in different styles. This is to build writing (and reading) skills and develop methods of how to have an impact on the reader (or listener). The writing units this half term are:
- Campaign Speech - based on the book Holes
 - Maya Setting Description
 - Amazon Rainforest Report

Spelling
Spelling is still an important part of learning, helping children develop their vocabulary, how they convey meaning and how they are understood.
New spellings will be learnt weekly, supported by activities in class and homework. Spelling will come in two lists: rules and common exception words.
The Rule Spelling words for this half term are:
Maths
As with the previous half term, Maths will be structured to recap existing knowledge and teach new learning. This also continues with the application of the concrete, pictorial and abstract strategies, and knowing when it is best to apply them. The topics covered this term are:
- Fractions
 - Converting units
 - Ratio

We are still continuing with arithmetic practise, which includes a weekly test and times table practise (which will also include some testing)
Science
Children will be learning about electricity in Science this half term, focussed on the research question: what happens when we remove a component from an electrical circuit? They will recap voltage, circuits and components of circuits and take a deeper look at the reasons for how circuit components function.
RE
We will continue to learn about Jewish People and their faith this half term under the question of: How does following God affect a Jewish person's daily life? We will be looking at the rules within the Jewish Faith regarding kosher food, . The knowledge organiser is below.
Geography
We will be learning a new topic in Geography: South America and Rainforests. Children will be researching and investigating the question: Why does the Amazon Matter? Topics they will be learning about include: tropical and temperate rainforests (including features of rainforests and food within them) and the importance of rainforest and risks and threats to them (including deforestation).
DT
DT is linked to our Science unit, looking at electrical systems. This is all focussed on researching, designing, creating and testing a steady hand game. By Christmas children should have created a hand held toy.
Computing
This half term, we will be creating a web page. Considering factors for design and creation and addressing any snags.
PE
In PE, we will be continuing with Gymnastics, followed by a new unit on dance - looking at phrases, rhythms, dynamics and formations.

Half Term!
Posted: Oct 27, 2025 by: Alex Tosta (ATosta) on: Year 6 Class Blog
We have made it! The first half term has been done. From previous posts you can see how much learning has been going on in Year 6.
This week we have wrapped up The Maya in History, comparing them to the Ancient Egyptians, whilst moving to the new topic of Fractions in Maths (simplifying and finding equivalents and using a number line to understand the magnitude of fractions). We have finished our explanation report about Light in Writing and moved on to performance poetry. In Reading, we looked at our value of the half term - generosity - in two texts. In RE, we looked at the Mitzvot - the rules for having a relationship with God and others in Judaism. Lots has been done, and, although we were tired, we all pushed through.
Next half term, we see the return of Geography, looking at South America and Rainforests, and DT, creating an electrical toy. These subjects alternate with History and Art respectively. For more detail on the curriculum, please look at the Year 6 webpage.
Homework:
From next half term there will be a homework club and I will be keeping a record of those bring their books in. Although children can mark their own work, I would like to see the work they have done and to see if they need any support. I have also noticed that some children are not bringing in their books and may not be doing the homework. As with Mathletics, there will be a homework club for those to catch up with any outstanding tasks.
Books - Due Thurs 03 Nov
Due to other events, the homework books were not taken home. Extra time has been given for this: it is due on Thursday 06 Nov. I have included images of the homework below - the children can do the home on paper or print them out and bring them into school when they return.
Maths: p12 - Mental Maths; p13 - Estimating and Checking

English (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling): p60 & p61 - Semi-Colons

Spellings - Test on Mon 20 Oct
They are in the children's planners or on a sheet (if they forget their planners). This week is revision of what we have learnt; they are below:
Mathletics - Due Thurs 23 Oct
3 new tasks have been added.
Children are to do any outstanding tasks. If work has not been done, a homework club will be started to give them a chance to catch up. A Mathletics Club will start next half term so children can catch up with their outstanding tasks.
TTRS
Children are to go on TTRS (Garage option) for 10 minutes.
