Year 6 Curriculum Map

The Year 6 long term plan is below.  This shows the coverage of work for the whole year.  Items to note: Art and DT are generally taught on alternative terms; this is the same for History and Geography.

Year 6 Long Term Plan for this Year

In this half term, we will be covering many topics across the curriculum.

English

English is split into Reading, Writing and Spellings.

Reading

We will be looking a range of texts (both fiction and fiction) to build the suite of reading skills - fluency, vocab knowledge, retrieval, inference, explanation and summary).  Mainly, a text will be read each week to develop each skill; some of the texts are linked to our current Science and History units.

Please ensure your child is reading at the very least 3 times per week at home to support them, not just reading independently but also support learning across the curriculum.  Planners should be signed on the day they have read, with a comment as appropriate.  If children particularly like a word or phrase they can write it in their planner as well.

Writing

We will be writing a range of pieces in different styles.  This is to build writing (and reading) skills and develop methods of how to have an impact on the reader (or listener).  The writing units this half term are:

  • Twisted Fairy tale Suspense Narrative
  • Holes Character Description
  • Light Explanation
  • Touched by an Angel Maya Angelou Performance Poetry

Spelling

Spelling is still an important part of learning, helping children develop their vocabulary, how they convey meaning and how they are understood.

New spellings will be learnt weekly, supported by activities in class and homework.

Spelling this half term are:

Maths

The Maths continues this half term by recapping existing knowledge and new learning.  This also continues with the application of the concrete, pictorial and abstract strategies, and knowing when it is best to apply them.  This topics covered this term are:

  • Place Value
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Fractions

We are still continuing with arithmetic practise, which includes a weekly test and times table practise (which will also include some testing)

Science

Children will be learning about light in Science this half term.  They will recap how light travels, look deeper on how we see things and investigate the effect of shape on shadows.

RE

We will be learning about the Jewish faith this half term, looking at the cornerstones of Jewish faith, beliefs in God and how this is shown and customs for the people who follow that faith.  The knowledge organiser is below.

History

We will be learning an new topic in History: The Maya.  Children will learn who The Maya were, where and how they lived and compare their culture to other known civilisations, such as The Romans and The Ancient Egyptians.

History is taught to answer an enquiry question.  Our question for this half term is: How does the Mayan civilisation compare with another civilisation?

Art

Art is linked to to our History unit of The Maya.  Children will be learning about  Guatemalan Worry Dolls, and then design and making their own.

Computing

This half term, we will be learning about computing systems and networks, specifically how data is transferred across the internet.  This will look at how data is broken down, sending projects through the internet and communicating responsibly.

PE

In PE, we will be doing 3 units units: Forest School, Outdoor Adventurous Activities (team building exercises) and Gymnastics.  The will be split into two groups: one group will do forest school whilst the other does PE.

Week 6!

Posted: Oct 10, 2025 by: Alex Tosta (ATosta) on: Year 6 Class Blog

What a week!  We are really being carried away by the momentum of the term.  I can hardly believe we are only 2 weeks away from the end of the first half term - a sixth of the year.

The learning is continuing: making links, responding to misconceptions, challenging our thinking.

In writing, we are creating the model for our explanation report (and revising states of mater), whilst in Maths we have been engrossed in division (making lots of links between multiplication, subtraction, factors and times tables).  We can really see our worry doll emerging in Art, where as in PSHE we have been thinking about what keeps us physically and mentally healthy.  Science has seen us question why shadows change shape, learning that the smaller the distance and a light source the larger the shadow and explaining why this happens.  History saw us question why The Maya were a civilised culture through looking at their writing, maths and calendars.  In RE we have started to analyse two psalms to see how they guide Jewish people to have a closer relationship with God.

We are really diving deep in our learning.

Bring on next week.

Homework

Books - Due Wed 15 Oct

Maths: p11 - Written Division; p15 - Multiples, Factors and Primes.

Mathletics - Due Thurs 16 Oct

3 new tasks have been added.

Children are to do any outstanding tasks.  If work has not been done, a homework club will be started to give them a chance to catch up.  A Mathletics Club is being started so children can catch up with their outstanding tasks.

Have a brilliant weekend.
