Year 6 Curriculum Map
In this half term, we will be covering many topics across the curriculum.
English
English is split into Reading, Writing and Spellings.
Reading
We will be looking a range of texts (both fiction and fiction) to build the suite of reading skills - fluency, vocab knowledge, retrieval, inference, explanation and summary). Mainly, a text will be read each week to develop each skill; some of the texts are linked to our current Science and History units.
Please ensure your child is reading at the very least 3 times per week at home to support them, not just reading independently but also support learning across the curriculum. Planners should be signed on the day they have read, with a comment as appropriate. If children particularly like a word or phrase they can write it in their planner as well.
Writing
We will be writing a range of pieces in different styles. This is to build writing (and reading) skills and develop methods of how to have an impact on the reader (or listener). The writing units this half term are:
- Twisted Fairy tale Suspense Narrative
- Holes Character Description
- Light Explanation
- Touched by an Angel Maya Angelou Performance Poetry
Spelling
Spelling is still an important part of learning, helping children develop their vocabulary, how they convey meaning and how they are understood.
New spellings will be learnt weekly, supported by activities in class and homework.

We are still continuing with arithmetic practise, which includes a weekly test and times table practise (which will also include some testing)

We will be learning about the Jewish faith this half term, looking at the cornerstones of Jewish faith, beliefs in God and how this is shown and customs for the people who follow that faith. The knowledge organiser is below.
History
We will be learning an new topic in History: The Maya. Children will learn who The Maya were, where and how they lived and compare their culture to other known civilisations, such as The Romans and The Ancient Egyptians.
History is taught to answer an enquiry question. Our question for this half term is: How does the Mayan civilisation compare with another civilisation?
Art
Art is linked to to our History unit of The Maya. Children will be learning about Guatemalan Worry Dolls, and then design and making their own.

Wow! How quick has this week gone! Writing unit completed - check. Maths unit completed - check. New PE unit - check. New DT unit - check. We have been emersed in WW2 with learning about the Battle of Britain, the Blitz and D-Day whilst writing a balanced argument of whether our class book character (Joseph, a boy in London, 1940) should return to his grandma’s in the countryside. This will keep going as we learn about National Parks, which were set up after the war, later in the half term. Alongside all of this, we are still prepping for the SATs.
Talking of such, here is the homework for this week.
